AI Can Help You Work Faster. It Cannot Tell You What Your Life Is For

Artificial intelligence may help you answer thousands of questions, but some of the most important questions in life remain deeply personal. What kind of person do you want to become? What contribution do you want to make? What kind of life would feel meaningful to you?

These questions matter more in a changing economy because a job title is a fragile place to build your entire identity. If you tell yourself, 'I am an accountant', what happens if the profession changes dramatically? A broader statement such as, 'I help people and organisations make better financial decisions' can survive several different job titles.

Your profession is one way you contribute. Your purpose is broader. It may involve solving difficult problems, creating beauty, caring for people, building businesses, teaching, protecting others, discovering knowledge, raising a family or serving a community. Purpose gives you more than one way to express what matters.

Humility is important too. AI may repeatedly show us that tasks we thought required unusual intelligence can be automated or accelerated. Do not build your identity around being the smartest person in the room. Stay teachable. Be willing to become a beginner again.

At the same time, humility should not become timidity. You still need confidence to apply, create, speak, lead, experiment and fail. Confidence is not knowing you will succeed. It is believing you can respond to what happens next.

This leads to the idea of becoming antifragile. A fragile object breaks under stress. A resilient one survives. An antifragile person tries to learn and become stronger because of difficulty. If a technology changes your work, you learn. If an industry contracts, you pivot. If a project fails, you extract the lesson. Disruption becomes information.

Parents can support this by separating a young person's worth from one exam result, one degree or one career choice. Young people need ambition, but they also need room to revise their plans as they learn more about themselves and the world.

Purpose is not something everyone discovers in one dramatic moment. It can grow through experience. Notice what energises you, what problems you care about, what people rely on you for and what kind of work feels worth doing even when it is difficult.
